What is IP rating?

An IP (Ingress Protection) rating is a standard that classifies the degree of protection provided by a device against solids and liquids. It is commonly used to determine the durability and suitability of electronic devices, particularly in outdoor environments or in harsh industrial settings.

Understanding IP rating codes

The IP rating consists of two numbers. The first number represents the level of protection against solid objects such as dust, while the second number indicates the level of protection against water. These numbers range from 0 to 6 for solids and 0 to 8 for liquids.

Interpreting the first number

The first number in an IP rating identifies the level of protection against solid objects. Here's a breakdown of each level:

0: No protection against solid objects.

1: Protection against objects larger than 50mm, such as a hand.

2: Protection against objects larger than 12.5mm, like fingers.

3: Protection against objects larger than 2.5mm, such as tools or thick wires.

4: Protection against objects larger than 1mm, such as small wires or screws.

5: Limited protection against dust ingress.

6: Complete protection against dust ingress.

Decoding the second number

The second number in an IP rating indicates the level of protection against liquids. Here's what each level means:

0: No protection against water.

1: Protection against vertically falling drops of water.

2: Protection against 15-degree tilted falling drops of water.

3: Protection against spraying water up to 60 degrees from vertical.

4: Protection against splashing water from any direction.

5: Protection against low-pressure jets of water from any direction.

6: Protection against powerful jets of water or heavy seas.

7: Protection against temporary immersion in water (up to 1 meter for 30 minutes).

8: Protection against continuous immersion in water under specified conditions.

Conclusion

Having an understanding of IP rating is crucial when selecting electronic devices for specific environments. Whether you're choosing a smartphone, a camera, or even outdoor lighting, knowing the level of protection it offers against solids and liquids ensures its longevity and reliability.
