What is the difference between en 62368 and en 60950 ?

EN 60950 and EN 62368 are two important standards that guide the design and testing of various electronic products. EN 60950, also known as IEC 60950, was the previous standard for ITE safety, providing guidelines for the design and testing of computers, routers, and switches. However, as technology advanced and new types of devices entered the market, it became evident that a more modern and all-encompassing standard was needed.

EN 62368, on the other hand, is a newer standard that replaces EN 60950. It is broader in scope and covers a wider range of electronic devices, including audio/video and communication technology equipment. This expansion allows for greater flexibility when designing and manufacturing new devices that fall within the scope of this standard.

One of the main differences between EN 62368 and EN 60950 is their scope. EN 62368 covers a wider range of products beyond traditional ITE, including audio/video and communication technology equipment. This expansion allows for greater flexibility when designing and manufacturing new devices that fall within the scope of this standard.

Another significant difference is the new classification system introduced in EN 6236 This system categorizes energy sources, such as electrical, thermal, or chemical, based on their potential to cause harm. By classifying these energy sources, designers can better assess the risks associated with their products and implement necessary safety measures accordingly.

EN 62368 also places more emphasis on risk assessment throughout the entire product lifecycle, including potential risks arising from foreseeable misuse or abuse of the equipment. On the other hand, EN 60950 places a greater emphasis on product components and their compliance with safety requirements, which includes multimedia devices, audio/video equipment, and communication technologies.

In conclusion, EN 62368 and EN 60950 are two important standards that guide the design and testing of various electronic products. EN 62368 is a newer standard that covers a wider range of electronic devices, while EN 60950 is a more established standard that focuses on product components and safety requirements. Both standards provide important guidelines for designers and manufacturers to ensure the safety and reliability of their products.
