What is IEC 61000-2-12 Ed.4:2018?

IEC 61000-2-12 Ed.4:2018 is a technical standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on the immunity requirements and test methods for electrical and electronic equipment exposed to electromagnetic disturbances coming from high-frequency conducted disturbances along supply lines.

Scope of the Standard

The scope of IEC 61000-2-12 Ed.4:2018 encompasses all types of electrical and electronic apparatus that are connected to public low-voltage power supply networks with rated voltages up to 1000 V AC or up to 1500 V DC. The standard provides guidelines for mitigating the impact of conducted disturbances on the performance of this equipment.

Requirements and Test Procedures

IEC 61000-2-12 Ed.4:2018 specifies the test levels, test equipment, and test procedures required to evaluate the immunity of electrical and electronic equipment to conducted disturbances. The standard outlines various test configurations, including voltage dip and interruption immunity tests, as well as voltage fluctuations and flicker immunity tests.

The standard also provides details on how to assess and classify the performance of equipment under test based on their immunity level. It defines four classes of immunity, ranging from A to D, with the highest class (D) indicating the highest immunity level.

Compliance and Implementation

Compliance with IEC 61000-2-12 Ed.4:2018 ensures that electrical and electronic equipment can withstand and operate properly in environments with high-frequency conducted disturbances along supply lines. Manufacturers and designers of such equipment should consider the requirements and recommendations outlined in the standard during the design and development stages.

Additionally, compliance with this standard provides reassurance to customers and end-users that the equipment has been adequately tested for immunity against conducted disturbances. It also facilitates harmonization and international acceptance of products in the market.
